Last year my partner and I embarked on our IVF journey and I can happily say that we now have a beautiful baby boy.
Believe me when I say I understand just how lucky I am to have fallen pregnant on our first round. However, I truly believe it was more than just “beginners luck”. With that in mind I thought I would impart some knowledge via helpful hints on how to tackle what can be quite a difficult (but exciting) time:
Hint 1: Get as healthy as you can 3 to 4 months prior to your transfer
- If you smoke, stop
- If you drink, stop
- If you drink coffee, cut down to one a day
- Take a good look at your diet and swap to healthy alternatives where you can
- Up your fitness, whether that’s daily walks or working with a personal trainer (please note: talk to your trainer about your situation to ensure you’re not over doing it, especially in the lead up to the transfer)
Hint 2: Visit a fertility acupuncturist
- Seeing an acupuncturist months before you take the IVF plunge will prepare your body for the upcoming transfer. But this isn’t the only benefit! Your acupuncturist can be a wealth of knowledge on maximizing wellness. And if they have been in practice for some time they will have a bunch of hints that they have sourced from previous clients who have fallen pregnant. Definitely take note of their do’s and dont’s.
Hint 3: Remove as many sources of stress from your life as you can
- Try to limit work stresses. You may or may not want to share your journey with your employer. Either way, it is best to request a day off for some down time, or to step down from responsibilities of a task or project if the stress gets too much.
- If you know people that have gone through IVF speak with them about any concerns you may have. Or if you haven’t got any friends or family in that category, your fertility nurse will be the best person to contact.
Hint 4: Actively practice positive thinking
- Change your partners name in your phone to “Baby Daddy”
- Change your computer password to “Pregnant in *month*” (inserting the month you have your transfer scheduled)
- Buy a newborn outfit and put it somewhere in your house where you can see it. The more you can see it, and increase your positive thoughts, the better!
- Listen to fertility meditations. There are a bunch of apps and YouTube videos you can access (for free ~ I know how important that is, with IVF costing so much!) If you’re time poor then try to incorporate listening to meditations into other tasks eg. Driving to work, on the bus/train, eating lunch or even when you jump into bed at night
Hint 5: Put ALL the advice you get into practice
- You will never regret going the extra mile to get what you want, but you will regret not doing something if you don’t fall pregnant. And regret, resentment, anger etc are all emotions we want you to avoid!
And from me to you, from the bottom of my heart, GOOD LUCK!
