Product Review: Nursing Bras

Nursing bras can be expensive. Plain and simple. However, a piece of cloth that holds up (and in) your oversized and possibly painful milk makers is a necessity. So if you have even the slightest inkling of a desire to breastfeed your baby, I recommend a properly sized, functional nursing bra. Leave behind the Victoria Secret beauty; I promise you’ll return to your chic fashion choices soon enough. For now, focus on getting fitted for an undergarment that will become like a second skin to your wardrobe.

The Motherhood Seamless Clip Down Nursing Bra meets every demand. The fabric is available in many stylish colors; the material is soft and silky against achy muscles. The wide straps and bra band make it a perfect option for your growing chest. I’ve experimented with other brands and designs of nursing bras in my breastfeeding journey, but the seamless nursing bra was my go-to.

1) Motherhood Seamless Clip Down Nursing Bra ($24-$31) – FAVORITE

2) Motherhood Wrap Nursing Sleep Bra (2 Pack) ($21.99) – COMFORT

3) On A Major Budget? Get this 5-in-1pack for ($30.99). – AFFORDABLE

As a smaller chested girl, although I grew 2 sizes during pregnancy, my bra fitter and I agreed I could still get away with a less structured bra. Use a bra fitting to your advantage. Ask questions; an experienced fitter will be able to help you decide and will explain the differences between each type, example: sleep bra v. full coverage bra. In my opinion, the Motherhood brand also has the strongest clips and straps of any nursing bra manufacturer (see my note below on the importance). Dealing with strap unraveling and deterioration is a nuisance, not to mention expensive to keep replacing bras due to poor construction.

Note: Always try out the clip down section of a nursing bra before deciding to purchase it. Those little clips could be a make-it-or-break-it moment. If they don’t unclip and refasten easily, forget it. Nobody has time to fiddle with clips while you’re juggling either a screaming, hungry newborn or a peaceful baby who fell asleep on the bar (ahem, those gigantic boobs you’re now sporting provide a milk buffet). And if you think those clips are “optional”, consider this: pulling up or down your entire bra cup while holding said screaming baby mentioned before will become the stuff of nightmares. There is no option. There is only necessity. Pumping is also made much easier when you have the ability to get rid of only the material covering your breasts, rather than trying to remove your entire bra.

Think of a nursing bra as a new brest friend (pun clearly intended). Make friends with it. Love it. In time, you will have to part with your easy access nursing solution. Cry if you must (I know I did). Soon you’ll be able to again rock the neon, lacy, sexy coverings from before. And then burn those old, milk stained, nursing bras you wore 24/7. Trust me when I say it’s liberating.
