I remember the moment quite clearly; it was pretty cliche to be honest. I was walking around the grocery store, carrying my overdue, pregnant belly around the aisles looking for food to stock my fridge for the first couple days of having a brand new baby. And then it happened: my water broke.
“Oh gosh, oh gosh, oh GOSH” I thought to myself as I waddled my way to the front of the store to figure out my plan, leaving a lovely mark with every step I took. My husband was at work, and being a week overdue, I knew what would quickly be approaching. My mom happened to be with me, so we went straight to my OB’s to then be admitted into the hospital. Baby girl was coming! And 28 hours later she was born. She didn’t come the way we originally planned, but it was absolutely perfect.
That was almost 3 years ago.
I look back at photos from our time at the hospital, all taken with our cell phones – and as a photographer, I can’t believe that we didn’t think through getting photos professionally taken! I had my camera with me, but I was recovering from a C-section, so I ended up handing my super fancy camera to my brother-in-law only to come home to blurry photos of our time in the hospital. I still cherish these photos because they’re all I have, but oh how I wish that I hired a professional photographer to take photos of us in the hospital.
I didn’t have any photos of my little one swaddled in her bassinet. I didn’t have a photo of me holding her that I felt I could frame in her room. I didn’t have photos of her newborn curled feet, wrinkly and new. And I missed out on it, not even realizing it until after the moment had long passed.
Because of this regret I had with my first-born, I have become known for doing Fresh 48 sessions. If you’ve never heard of them, that’s okay! They’re just starting to gain more attention – and they’re basically a lifestyle session in the hospital room within 48 hours of your baby being born. They are some of the most authentic, intimate, and special photos to a family – because you can never go back to recreate the hospital newness of your little one – no matter how much you wish you could.
So if you’re currently pregnant, I highly highly recommend having someone come to a Fresh 48 for your family! You won’t regret doing, but you may regret not. I know I did.
