Many of you will have a memory that goes a little like this: you are a little girl playing with your best friend. You put on an oversized white dress and an overwhelming amount of eyeshadow and red lipstick, while she wears a daggy old suit that your Dad had stashed away in the garage. You hold a bunch of flowers picked from the next-door neighbor’s garden as you stroll down the back path of your house, ready to marry your fake husband while the pet dog, Sandy, watches on.
You then sit down to some “high tea”, brought out by your Mum on plastic plates, to seriously discuss what you are going to call your children (two boys and two girls) not thinking that trends will change your mind between now and then. Or that your real future husband might have something to say about your choices!
You think about all the cool names of all the cool people that you know (which, at age 7, is quite limited). Or you get creative and try to think of something completely different so that your children are unique. Yet, at that age, we don’t fully understand the responsibility that we have in naming our children.
As an adult, we start to think about the ramifications of calling our newborn son a cute name like “Benji” when he has the potential to grow up and become a lawyer or a politician.
OR What nickname will they get if we name them “Charlotte”
OR What name will they get teased with if we call them “Willamena”
OR What does the name “Bobby” sound like with the last name “Quinn” (answer: a little too much like bobby pin!)

It really is a big responsibility we hold in our hands. Kids in the schoolyard can be brutal and we ultimately want to cushion our children from any potential hurts that may be coming their way, even if that may be in the very distant future!
Or is it just our adult brains thinking too much about it? After all, doesn’t the saying go “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” ~ William Shakespeare.
While we appreciate that there are plenty of beautiful baby books out there, well researched with 1000s of names, we thought you might like a condensed version. Because, well, we are all busy Mamas or soon-to-be Mamas!
So, without further ado… An A-Z list that provides you with unique names for both boys and girls.
