You have found out the exciting news that you are expecting. So many things will be racing round your mind right now, not to mention the regular check-ups and visits to your midwife. There is also so much to think about. One of those things is choosing the birth name to give to your new-born baby. The name you chose for your baby will be a defining piece of his or her identity for a lifetime.
So no pressure, right?
How do we go about choosing that perfect name? What factors should we take into consideration when thinking up suitable names. Take a look at the list for some useful tips and ideas below.
POPULAR NAMES.
One regular complaint is how popular a name is? Do you want a less common name? do your homework. Try adding the name into an internet search. Does it show up many results? Alternatively look through baby name websites, what shows to be most commonly used? Ask friends and family if they know of someone with a specific name. most first-time expected parents don’t hang out with kids a lot, so asking around really will help give insight in to how popular a name could be.
FAMILY OPINIONS.
One I can personally relate to myself! The opinion of family and friends. No matter what you decide to choose everyone is bound to have an opinion. And you know what? That’s ok. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion after all. Once your little one is born you’ll find that people suddenly adore a name they once hated. Try not to worry who does or doesn’t like your choices, remember this is your baby after all.
Hush, hush.
Already chosen that name? Why not keep it quiet till the big day? Not one for discussions or heated name debates? Keeping the chosen name of your offspring to yourselves is a great and exciting way to keep those comments and opinions at bay.
They chose what?
Although names such as “HuggyBear” sound cute, but seriously? Remember this is the name your child will have for a lifetime! This is not your name. it is the name of your son or daughter. How will this name fit into future society? Your baby won’t be a small adorable bundle with a quirky name forever. They will grow up to become fully fledged adults with careers. How will their choice of name effect their future?
Nicknames.
Are you happy with a short abbreviated name? or prefer a name not to be shortened. If your happy with a Madeline becoming a Maddie or a Maxwell becoming Max, then by all means go for it. If you’re not so keen on nicknames, then some tough thinking on none abbreviated names will be needed. After all, just because you may use his or her full name doesn’t mean that others will.
Surname.
You have the perfect name! but does it sound right with the surname? How do the initials once put together pan out? Do they spell something outrageously silly? Say the name out loud or write it down on a piece of paper. Does it sound right? Or one that will simply not go together.
Sure, it’s hard not to obsess on a decision which seems so weighty and important. But try to relax. You have a whole nine months to play around and experiment with different names. No matter what choice you make I am sure you will pick a name that you will love and treasure forever.
