If for some reason you’re not a Christmas person I would bet my last dollar that your kid(s) has assisted in converting you to the merry side.
Christmas with children around is a different kind of Christmas. They simply make the day more magical.
This year is the first with my own child and it really has opened my eyes to the magic of Christmas; and I was already a Christmas person!
Our first visit to a house with Christmas lights was such a beautiful experience. My son was obviously in awe. His eyes darted to and fro and he cuddled into me with a huge smile on his face when he encountered something he thought was magnificent. It’s something that I highly recommend to all parents no matter how old your little one is!
This time of year can be such a wonderful time of year for you to incorporate a range of different activities, which will ultimately become family traditions:
Putting up (and taking down) the Christmas tree
In my house we always put up the tree on the 1st December. However I have friends who do it a month out from Christmas and others that make an event of it on Christmas Eve.
The decorations themselves can become a tradition, by purchasing a special new bauble each year. This year we marked our son’s first Christmas by getting personalised baubles for each of us.
Christmas giving
This can involve more than just presents for friends and family. You can introduce the idea of helping out those less fortunate by volunteering at a Christmas Drive or placing a gift under a Giving Tree at your local shopping centre.
An idea I also like is asking your little one to select X amount of toys to give away so that Santa can bring them new ones.
Christmas movies
There are always a selection of Christmas movies on TV throughout December that you can watch or buy/download a few that you can watch on certain days in the lead up to the big day to get your family in the Christmas spirit
Christmas carols
Whether you decide to attend some carols or watch them on TV from the comfort of your own lounge room this too is a great way to get your family in the Christmas spirit. If you’re going to attend a carols session please take into account the variety of things you’ll need to take with you ~ it can end up being a big day/night out!
Leaving food and/or drinks for Santa
Do you leave beer or milk for Santa? Will he want a snack too? Why not ask your little one to write a thank you note. And don’t forget something for the reindeer!!
Opening presents
I know families that allow one present to be opened on Christmas Eve night, before going to bed. Or do you wait for Christmas morning? Do you wait for everyone to get up? Do you take in turns opening presents so you can watch people’s reactions? There are obviously a variety of different ways this can happen; it’s up to you to coordinate something special for your family!
Christmas lunch/dinner
Are you the family who will be putting on Christmas lunch or dinner each year? Or is this shared around between different family members, or friends?
It can be such a busy time of year so be sure to plan out your day in advance, especially if you had multiple locations to visit throughout the day.
Do you have a Christmas routine or ritual you’ll love to add to this? Comment below.
From our family to yours, we wish you a wonderful, and safe, Christmas. May ALL of your wishes come true x
