14 Love Gestures to celebrate Dads on Father’s Day

“A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.” –Unknown

Like the recently celebrated Mother’s Day, this year’s Father’s Day celebration is sure to stand out among that of previous years. With the stretch of lock-down behind us and a new world ahead of us, let’s just say that the coronavirus pandemic has perfected the art of disruption. No play-dates for kids, no hangouts for the ladies, and no game hangouts for men; everyone is certainly on the receiving end.

The commemoration of this year’s Father’s Day, slated for June 21st, will see the presentation of many unconventional gift ideas to dads as people remain confined to their homes to curb the spread of the virus. But the best thing about thoughtful gifts is that they don’t need to cost a fortune. We’ll dare say that a heart full of love, a keen eye for a loved one’s taste and awareness of their preference will get them smiling once they unwrap the gift or experience the gesture. Besides, knowing how men brag about not being the ‘emotional’ gender, it’s surely a delight to see them tear up once in a while, and for good reason too.

So, this article is a conspiracy against dads as we’re set to make them bawl this year with the cooperation of their wives and kids. We do not doubt that these 14 gestures will get the job done. Let’s get started!

  1. A DIY gift: Take hand-crafted cards for instance. What better way to say ‘Thank You for being here’ than in your very own words? Seeing their kid’s colourful drawings of a big heart or their wife’s handwriting with their chosen words in celebration of them is sure to melt any man’s heart. We guarantee that the touch of originality that this brings will not be forgotten in a hurry.

2. Food: No one will pass up food! Especially when it is good, smells delicious and tastes sumptuous, certainly not a man who loves extra helpings or snacks between meals. You can take that to the bank. Whether it’s a full-scale BBQ and grill experience, a platter of food or homemade sweet treats whipped up by you and the kids, every dad will cherish the sit-down time he gets to share with his family as they all enjoy the meal. If he loves cooking, you may also have him join in fixing the food.

3. Slug it out: Contests can be fun, and they’re a great way to interact as a family and build a team spirit. From pizza-making contests and trivia to makeshift karaoke and ‘Who Did What?’ give your husband the gift of laughter as he experiences the intimacy of a fun-filled leisurely moment with his family. You may also host a Zoom quiz contest and host family, friends, and other households.

4. Super delightful spa: Whoever said only women need a day at the spa? From foot soaks and saunas to full-body massages, a man’s body also loves to ease off the stress. This is a good place to discharge the kids and give your husband a treat. Assume the role of his executive-cum- exclusive masseuse and give him a steamy spa experience. Wink!

5. Virtual get-together: Despite the restrictions of movement, distance is no barrier where technology is available. You can organize a video greeting card by assembling your friends, extended family and loved ones on a conference call and have everyone share a personalized greeting or words of gratitude with him. Alternatively, you can spice up the gathering by also hosting a Netflix Party.

6. Backyard camping: Recreating camping without leaving the confines of your home is one way to strike a chord with nature-loving dads. This mini-getaway promises both the allure of outdoor activities along with a ‘nearby’ real and clean bathroom. You’re also sparing your family the burden of hauling heavy camping equipment. With a large tent, comfy sleeping bags, quick-fix camp chow and a makeshift campfire, the experience is set!

7. Virtual world tour/day trips: With the stay-at-home order in place, even the most outgoing of extroverts can hardly travel for leisure. And so, Virtual Reality will make do for now; thanks to technology, we can go anywhere even if it’s halfway across the world. Give your husband a tour of the world without a passport or long-hour flights. Youtube’s Disney World virtual theme park offers sights such as Indiana Jones Adventure, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Transformers, Hogwarts Express, and even cities like California, Paris and Orlando. You may also consider virtual museums if he’s a lover of art or history.

8. Create acrostics: Acrostics are poems, puzzles or other composition in which a sequence of letters – for instance, the first letter on each new line form a word. Turn on you and your kids’ creative genius by creating poetry that has your husband at the centre of it. Explore various styles of using his first name to list out why you all love him, his character and most lovable qualities. Get the Kleenex ready for this one!

9. Sing his favourite song (Karaoke): What better way to have a good laugh together than have him listen to you and the children sing his favourite song? You may also have him join in on a song that he loves but always hums through. Get him the lyrics online this Father’s Day and this time around, he won’t have to hum ‘la la la’ from second verse to the end. Lol.

10. Breakfast in bed: Breakfast in bed is the gift that keeps on giving. It not only melts hearts all over the world day in day out but also reflects warmth and appreciation. Gift your husband with an early morning body fuel just as he likes it. If he’s a fit-fam or health aficionado, then consider fruit blends, smoothies, and more options. You may also feel free to explore the full breakfast menu, heart-shaped pastries, vegetarian, pescatarian or whatever diet type he loves. Don’t forget to slip in a quirky note or something with an inside joke that sure to make him laugh.

11. Tux Card (DIY): Truth be told, the regular ‘Happy Father’s Day’ greeting card with a moustache or blue-and-silver stars tend to feel generic. Personalize this year’s Father’s Day greeting card by creating a tux card for him. No doubt, the children would love to add their input into making this happen. You can also add a heroic, unexpected twist by creating a Superman logo beneath the tux, in appreciation of his awesomeness!

12. Video Game with friends: From Call of Duty to Splinter Cell: Black List, games bring men together. If he has a ride-or-die group of friends, get together with their wives and organize a virtual hangout games session for them all and watch them go excited as the plan unfolds. This offers an excellent opportunity for them to bond and to share a memorable time.

13. Homemade coupons: Create personalized coupons that show a list of the ‘chores’ he can redeem throughout the day. From coupon that says ‘Big Hug’, back rub, dinner in bed, 5 hours uninterrupted sleep, bottler service, foot massage and so on.

14. Car wash: With water piping out of the hose, brush, wiping cloths and soap suds everywhere, mom and the kids washing daddy’s car at home is a great outdoor experience to have as a family while daddy observes. It’s also a chance to get the kids active, as they won’t pass up an opportunity to ‘help out’ as you all work together to give dads car(s) a good wash.

Whatever you choose, don’t forget that the goal is to appreciate your man and shower him with affection. Pop a bottle – or two – of wine, pay attention to the little things, and in all, give him a memorable Father’s Day experience by affirming that he’s loved and cherished. Don’t forget to be spontaneous, because sometimes, the most beautiful gestures may even come unplanned.
