Let’s talk about how husbands can support their partner who just became a new mom. I’ve got to be honest, some husbands do a fantastic job of it but some, not so much. I have put together some ways moms can feel supported.
First and foremost you probably already know this but ALWAYS listen to your wife. If she suggests something that’s outside of your regular habits or routines, it’s probably for a good reason. New moms often have quite a bit on their plate and are very tired, so if you can do something to lighten the load that would be really appreciated.
Second, and equally as important, never underestimate the power of a hug or a back rub. You don’t need to be a professional masseuse to give someone a great back rub. Even if it’s just a few minutes, it can make all the difference in the world.
Next, try to say as many positive things as possible. New moms face an inordinate amount of pressure and can feel like everyone’s expecting them to have everything figured out all the time. Celebrate the small victories and be there to support when things don’t quite go to plan.
Finally, offer to change diapers, feed the baby and give her a break for a few hours here and there. This can be even more helpful if you already have other children. You can offer to take on some of the responsibilities everyday which can be invaluable for new moms.
In short, be her partner, not just a spectator. Show your wife that she isn’t alone in this new parenting process and that you are there to support however you can.
In conclusion, being a supportive husband as your wife enters motherhood can mean the world to her. It doesn’t have to involve fancy spa treatments or expensive gifts, but rather it’s about being there to show your love and support, whatever she needs. Afterall, you both had this baby together.
