How to support a new mom

7 Ways To Support A New Mom

” New moms need just as much attention as the newborns do.. because they too have just been born.”

A lot of changes occur during pregnancy. After birth, women still experience changes that may be permanent or temporary. These changes could be physical, mental, or emotional. Having a new baby is delightful, however, being a new mother involves having to deal with a lot all at a time. This can go from breastfeeding to recovering from post-pregnancy changes, ensuring that the baby is well taken care of and more. Some women may become depressed, have mood swings and other emotional problems during this period. Depending on your relationship with the new mom, there are many ways you can offer assistance to her – just as you deem fit. They include the following:

  1. Send words of encouragement: Remind her of how brave she is to have overcome such a great milestone, how her beauty is ageless, and how much of an awesome mother she is. This has a lot of positive impact than you can imagine.
  2. Give her a listening ear: A new mom probably has thousands of things to say regarding her new status. Some would keep it to themselves due to guilt or the fear that they might be wrongly judged. If you find yourself around a new mom, give her the chance to pour out her mind without judging her or reacting negatively.
  3. Bring food or cook for her: Your relationship with her would determine if this will be necessary. If yes, think of highly nutritious foods that would benefit her during this period. You can make this in her home or bring it for her. On the other hand, you can organize a meal train for her. This will ward off a lot of stress from cooking.
  4. Spend time with her: She probably needs your support to cater for herself physically, mentally, and emotionally especially at a time when fewer people are coming to visit. Spending time around a new mom can help her get rid of the postpartum depression, the negative thoughts she probably has in her head, or the truckload of stress that comes with being a new mom. Depending on what she wants, you can decide to talk, see a movie or play a non-strenuous game with her. Spending time around her can be of huge help as long as you maintain a positive vibe. During the pandemic, a video call while she goes about her day may just be as effective.
  5. Assist her with the baby: Babies can be so demanding, they want all the attention which can be exhausting. Due to this, sleeping can be really hard to get, but as a new mom, she needs it. If you have a good relationship with her and she trusts you enough to take care of her baby, you can ask to help her while she sleeps.
  6. Buy her gifts: Be thoughtful when thinking of a gift to give her. Ensure that the gift(s) will be very useful for her at this period. Try gifts like baby carriers, diapers, comfortable pillows, leggings for mom’s, etc. However, consider affordability too.
  7. Hire cleaners for her: Do this before she gets home from the hospital after asking for her permission or her husband’s. You can also organize this after she gets home too, try to as it is mandatory to keep the environment clean. This will ease a lot of stress.
